About this scholarship
Postdoctoral researchers who are citizens of countries with diplomatic relations with Japan, including the US and Canada, may pursue cooperative research at Japanese universities and research institutes for 12 to 24 months. Candidates must have received a PhD within six years of the fellowship start date.
The award covers round-trip airfare, a JPY 362,000 monthly maintenance allowance, a settling-in allowance, overseas travel insurance, and access to JSPS research grants arranged through the host institution.
US researchers apply to the JSPS Washington Office by October 31 each year. Canadian researchers may apply through JSPS Washington or NSERC. Japanese host researchers may also submit nominations through JSPS headquarters with deadlines in August and April.
The standard JSPS postdoctoral fellowship dates to 1988 and is among Japan's flagship programs for hosting foreign early-career researchers.
