About this scholarship
Pre- and postdoctoral researchers who are US or Canadian citizens or permanent residents may conduct collaborative research in Japan for 1 to 12 months. Eligible candidates hold or expect a PhD within two years of the fellowship start and must secure a host researcher at a Japanese university or national lab.
Fellows receive round-trip airfare, a monthly maintenance allowance of JPY 362,000 (JPY 200,000 for non-PhD holders at research start), a settling-in allowance for stays of three months or longer, overseas travel insurance, and optional research support funds arranged by the host.
US applicants submit directly to the JSPS Washington Office; Canadian applicants may apply through JSPS Washington or NSERC. The annual Washington Office deadline is October 31. Japanese host institutions may also nominate candidates through separate JSPS headquarters rounds.
JSPS has run North American short-term postdoctoral fellowships since 1997 to promote research exchange between Japan and Europe and North America.
