Japan Foundation Japanese Studies Fellowship

Supports humanities and social-science research in Japan. US citizens and permanent residents apply through the Japan Foundation in New York; Canadian applicants without US status apply through the Japan Foundation in Tokyo. Categories include long-term research (4-12 months), short-term research (21-89 days), and doctoral fellowships for ABD scholars.

Benefits include round-trip airfare, health insurance, settling-in and departure allowances, monthly stipend, dependent allowance where applicable, and enrollment fees varying by category.

Applications for 2026-2027 are due 1 December 2025 at 11:59 PM EST via the online portal. Principal awardees are notified in April 2026.
