About this scholarship

U.S. citizens or permanent residents in good standing at an ABA-accredited U.S. law school who are at least 21 may submit an original unpublished criminal law paper.

The winner receives $2,500 cash plus up to $800 travel to a Criminal Justice Section event. The winning entry may be published in Criminal Justice magazine.

Entries are due July 1 each year. The 2026 topic asks whether autism should be a defense, sentencing mitigator, both, or neither.

The ABA Criminal Justice Section sponsors this annual competition to encourage criminal justice scholarship.
