About this scholarship

Doctoral students enrolled at US or Canadian universities and postdocs who completed a doctorate within the last four years may apply for short research stays in Germany. US or Canadian citizens and permanent residents qualify, as do foreign nationals who earned their last degree in the US or Canada. Applicants need a confirmed host supervisor at a German university or research institute.

Funding covers 2 to 12 months for doctoral candidates and 2 to 6 months for postdocs, with a monthly stipend of €1,400, insurance, a travel allowance for stays over six months, and a research allowance for longer projects.

Apply online through the DAAD portal. There are fall and spring deadlines each year; US partner universities run campus pre-selection for the fall round only. Funding must begin in 2027 for the current cycle.

DAAD administers this program to support international research collaboration in Germany.
