About this scholarship

BIPOC students enrolled in an ALA-accredited MLIS or information studies program who have completed at least one course and intend to work in California libraries may apply. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and permanent California residents, belong to an eligible ethnic group, and demonstrate financial need. Up to three awards are given annually.

Each recipient receives $2,500 plus a one-year CLA student membership and recognition at the CLA annual conference.

Submit an online application with coursework records, financial need statement, references, and a 1,000-word essay by the spring deadline. The 2026 application period closed May 25, 2026. Oral interviews may be required.

The award honors Edna Yelland, a longtime CLA executive secretary who promoted the library profession in California.
