About this scholarship
Medical students and allied health graduate students enrolled at accredited U.S. institutions may apply for summer research scholarships in cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular disease/stroke, or cardiovascular surgery. Both the student and faculty preceptor must hold active AHA professional membership at application time.
Each scholarship provides $2,000 paid to the student's institution as a summer research stipend. Top cardiovascular disease recipients may receive an additional $1,000 as the Howard S. Silverman Scholar. Some categories include optional travel grants to AHA scientific meetings.
Applications are submitted electronically through the Council Awards Application System; the 2026 deadline is April 3. Students apply to only one of the three scholarship tracks and must include a scholar statement, preceptor statement, CVs, and optional reference letters.
The American Heart Association scientific councils run this recurring program to build early interest in cardiovascular and stroke research.
