About this scholarship

U.S. and Canadian medical students with limited prior neuroscience research experience may apply through an established Student Interest Group in Neurology (SIGN) chapter at their school. Applicants must be current AAN and SIGN members, have a faculty preceptor who is an AAN member, and conduct a neuroscience-based project at a U.S. or Canadian institution.

Recipients receive a $3,000 stipend for a roughly 10-week research project. The award is contracted through the student's medical school. Up to 15 students are selected each cycle.

Applications open December 15 and close March 15 each year. Required materials include a project proposal, budget, CV, bibliography, and two recommendation letters. The page showed the 2026 cycle as closed in July 2026.

The American Academy of Neurology funds this program to introduce medical students to clinical and basic neuroscience research.
