About this scholarship

Graduating seniors from public high schools in King, Pierce, or Snohomish counties, Washington, must be nominated by their school counselor to apply for the Nellie Martin Carman Scholarship.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens with demonstrated financial need who plan full-time enrollment at a Washington state college or university in a major other than music, art, sculpture, drawing, interior decorating, or domestic science. Up to 40 recipients may receive up to $2,000 per year, renewable for up to four years with a 3.0 GPA.

  • Parent financial form and applicant budget sheet
  • Handwritten essay
  • Must be a graduating senior from a public high school in King, Pierce, or Snohomish County, Washington (full-time student); planning to attend a college/university in Washington State full-time
  • Must be a United States citizen (copy of US Passport, Certificate of Citizenship, or Naturalization Certificate required)
  • Copy of Student Aid Report (summary of FAFSA application) or a copy of the most recent IRS Income Tax Return 1040 (pages 1 and 2) from the person claiming applicant as a dependent
  • One letter of recommendation from someone other than the school counselor (gives an evaluation of character, ability, and capacity for continuing development)
  • Copy of official high school transcript
  • Copy of SAT/ACT test scores
  • Recent solo photograph
  • Financial Aid award letter from intended college
  • Part II Financial Form completed by parents and Part III Financial Budget Sheet completed by applicant
  • Application must be nominated/submitted through the student's high school counselor; must be postmarked by the deadline (April 6, 2026)
  • Music and art majors are not eligible; renewable for up to four years
  • Renewable for up to four years with a 3.0 GPA.
