About this scholarship

North Carolina residents who are public high school seniors with a minimum 2.5 unweighted GPA may apply for the NCAE Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship. Selection considers character, community involvement, and scholastic achievement. Funds are for the freshman year only.

Award amounts vary based on annual donations and MLK event fundraising; the structured award amount is $500. Money is distributed in the fall and spring semesters of the freshman year after proof of college enrollment.

Submit a completed application, a resume of accomplishments and activities, two essays (how Dr. King's philosophies influence your life, and why you deserve the scholarship and need aid), an official sealed transcript, and two recommendation letters (one from school personnel on letterhead, one from the community).

Established in 1992 by the NCAE Minority Affairs Commission, the scholarship continues in partnership with the North Carolina Foundation for Public School Children.
