About this scholarship
The National Association of Hispanic Journalists awards scholarships each year to students planning careers in English- or Spanish-language journalism on any platform. One application covers all awards, including the Rubén Salazar General Scholarship Fund ($2,000), the María Elena Salinas Scholarship ($2,500), the Cecilia Alvear Scholarship for aspiring producers ($5,000), the Lori Montenegro Scholarship focused on Afro-Latino students ($5,000), and the White House Correspondents' Association Scholarship for political journalism ($6,000).
Eligible applicants are college-bound high school seniors, undergraduates, and graduate students attending four-year or community colleges in the United States or Puerto Rico with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.8 (3.0 for some awards).
Applications require a one-page resume, two recommendation letters, unofficial transcripts, a 500-word essay on the applicant's interest in journalism, and up to three work samples. The deadline falls in late December each year.
