About this scholarship

The Metropolitan Opera's Laffont Competition (founded 1954 as the National Council Auditions) is the leading vocal competition for aspiring opera singers in North America. Singers must be 20-30 years old during the competition season (born August 1, 1996 - August 1, 2006 for 2026-27) and be citizens or lawful residents of the United States, Canada, Mexico, or a South American country, or full-time students enrolled there.

Applicants submit one unedited video of an operatic aria recorded in 2026, then advance through district, region, and national rounds. National Semifinalists receive $5,000, Finalists $10,000, and Grand Finals Winners $20,000; more than $500,000 is awarded each season.

Apply online July 1-31, 2026; a $30 registration fee applies at the district round.
