About this scholarship

Open to outstanding UBC Vancouver undergraduates in their graduating year who major in Psychology with a minor in Philosophy, major in Philosophy with a minor in Psychology, or double major in both Psychology and Philosophy.

Scholarships totalling $350 are made available annually by the Department of Psychology in memory of Mary Whiton Calkins; individual award amounts vary. The award is made on the recommendation of the Department of Psychology. There is no separate student application.

Mary Whiton Calkins was among the first generation of women to enter psychology in the early 20th century. Despite being a skilled student, she was denied official registration at Harvard because she was a woman. Inspired by the obstacles she faced, a group of UBC Psychology undergraduates campaigned to establish an award in her name.
