About this scholarship

Outstanding third- and fourth-year undergraduate and graduate students in the UBC Vancouver School of Music with a major or concentration in a string instrument may be nominated. Preference is given to students studying violin.

Scholarships are drawn from a $19,050 endowment established through an estate gift from Mary Tierney (1918-2007) in memory of her sister Kathleen Tierney (1914-1956). Per-recipient amounts are not fixed. Awards are made on the recommendation of the School of Music; for graduate students, the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies is consulted. There is no separate student application.

Mary and Kathleen Tierney, born in Calgary, both won scholarships to the Royal Academy of Music in London. Mary played with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra from 1944 until her retirement, and the endowment was funded by the sale of two Neapolitan violins Kathleen had acquired.
