Outstanding Ph.D. students in Mechanical Engineering at UBC Vancouver who have written a strong doctoral dissertation may be nominated for this prize.

Prizes totalling $1,000 are made available annually by the Department of Mechanical Engineering; individual prize amounts vary.

There is no separate application. Recipients are selected on the recommendation of the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

The prize honours Professor Martha Salcudean (FRSC, OC, OBC) (1934-2019), who served as Head of the department from 1985 to 1993 and was an internationally distinguished researcher recognized for her contributions to metallurgy and pulp and paper processes.
