Master of Journalism students at Toronto Metropolitan University in their final year may apply based on a major project proposal and detailed project budget submitted in the fall of that year.

Mark Gayn was a foreign correspondent whose career spanned Manchuria, Columbia Journalism School, Asia, and a syndicated Toronto Star column. The award formerly supported bachelor's entrants and now helps master's students travel for their own reporting.
