About this scholarship

Graduate or undergraduate Unitarian Universalist students preparing for careers in fine arts with financial need and active UU affiliation may apply for the Marion Barr Stanfield Art Scholarship through the UU Funding Program.

Award amounts vary. Eligible disciplines are painting, drawing, photography, and sculpture only; performing arts majors are ineligible. One-year awards; recipients may reapply annually.

Submit the application, essay, financial statements, tax documents, slide portfolio, transcript, educator recommendation, and church recommendation by February 15 (supporting documents due March 1).

  • Applicant must be a Unitarian Universalist (active member of a UU congregation, or attach a page explaining UU affiliation)
  • Official transcript from each college attended (plus official high school transcript if less than two years of college completed)
  • Letter of recommendation from a church official (minister or church officer establishing UU affiliation)
  • Letter of recommendation from an instructor/teacher qualified to evaluate artistic qualifications
  • Portfolio: 6-10 samples of best recent work on DVD/CD (PowerPoint welcome); no more than 10 slides
  • List of works on a separate sheet (title, medium, size, date, brief explanation)
  • Personal Financial Statement plus copies of prior-year income tax return / W-2 / 1099
  • Parent/Guardian/Spouse Financial Statement (if dependent or receiving additional support) with their tax documents
  • Optional resume may be included
  • Deadlines: completed application due February 15; supporting documentation due March 1
  • Awards are for one year; recipients may reapply annually.
  • Official high-school transcript is also required if fewer than two years of college have been completed.
