About this scholarship
Bucks County, Pennsylvania residents who are U.S. citizens, have lived in the county for at least two years, and demonstrate financial need may apply for the M. Verna Butterer Educational Trust. Eligible applicants include graduating high school seniors, current undergraduates, and non-traditional returning students seeking post-secondary education in the United States.
Funding is a combination scholarship and interest-free loan of up to $4,000 per year and may renew for up to four years at colleges, universities, technical schools, nursing schools, and other U.S. post-secondary institutions. The number of awards varies. Recipients are notified in late May.
Apply through the trust with materials showing residency, citizenship, enrollment plans, and financial need as determined by the trustees.
Verna Butterer was a longtime Soroptimist and Bucks County club leader. The trust continues her commitment to helping local students who need financial support for education after high school.

What else to submit
- One essay, no more than two typed double-spaced pages (approximately 500 words)
- Completed and signed five-page Financial Aid Application
- FAFSA Submission Summary with Student Aid Index circled
- Official transcript from every high school or post-secondary institution attended in the past four years
- Three letters of recommendation from non-family members
- Financial-aid award package, if available
- Materials showing residency, citizenship, enrollment plans, and financial need
- Choose and answer ONLY ONE of the three essay questions (check which one you chose)
- Essay limit: no more than two typed, double-spaced pages, approximately 500 words
- Fully completed and signed 5-page Financial Aid Application (name on bottom of each page; page 5 signed by student, parents/guardians, and spouse if applicable)
- FAFSA Submission Summary with Student Aid Index (SAI) circled (all pages)
- Official transcript from each high school or post-secondary institution attended in past 4 years
- Three (3) letters of recommendation from non-family members
- If available, copy of the financial aid award package from the school
- Eligibility: U.S. citizen, two-year Bucks County, PA residency, demonstrated financial need
- Submit by physical mail only; must be postmarked by March 15 (no emailed attachments accepted)
- Applications must be physically mailed and postmarked by March 15; emailed attachments are not accepted.
- Funding combines a scholarship and interest-free loan.
- Awards may renew for up to four years at eligible U.S. post-secondary institutions.
