About this scholarship
The Lotte Lenya Competition, run annually by the Kurt Weill Foundation for Music since 1998, rewards singing actors who excel across opera, operetta, golden-age musicals, and contemporary musical theater. The 2026 contest was open to performers of all nationalities roughly ages 19-32 (born between January 1, 1993 and March 1, 2007).
Applicants submit a video audition with four contrasting selections (a Kurt Weill theatrical piece, a pre-1968 musical number, a contemporary musical number, and an opera or operetta selection), plus a headshot, resume, and proof of age. Semifinals are held in New York City and finals in Rochester, NY.
First Prize is $25,000, Second Prize $20,000, and Third Prize $15,000, with additional special awards. Applications are due in early February each year; the 2026 deadline was February 4.
