About this scholarship

College-bound Shelby County, Indiana high school seniors with at least a 2.5 GPA who show community service, leadership, and character (caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility) may apply for the Lee E. Schauer Scholarship. Participation in sports or fitness is expected. YMCA membership is not required, but members who also volunteer at the Y receive additional consideration.

One award of $13,000 is paid over four years. Recipients must show satisfactory progress each year to renew.

The scholarship targets well-rounded students who may not qualify for GPA-heavy awards. It was established in 1989 by family and friends in memory of Lee E. Schauer, who died the summer before his senior year of high school.
