About this scholarship

Outstanding UBC Vancouver graduate students in the Vancouver School of Economics may be considered for this award, with preference for students who demonstrate an interest in focusing their studies on topics related to happiness and well-being.

The award amount varies. Awards are funded through an endowment established by friends, family, and colleagues in honour of Dr. John F. Helliwell (B.Com. 1959), along with matching funds from the Faculty of Arts.

Recipients are recommended by the Vancouver School of Economics in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. There is no separate student application.

Dr. Helliwell is a Canadian economist and Professor Emeritus of Economics at UBC. He was one of the three founding editors of the World Happiness Report in 2012 and was elected to the Royal Society of Canada in 1978 and appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1987.
