About this scholarship

Canadians and permanent residents of Canada pursuing master's or doctoral studies at a Canadian university may apply. Candidates should have an academic background that combines an interest in forests with the social sciences (for example forestry, agroforestry, natural resources management, environmental sciences, or climate science). Work focused on genomics or genetic modification is not eligible.

Funded by the Bene Endowment and IDRC, the fellowship supports field research costs in one or more countries of the Global South (Middle East, North Africa, West Africa, East Africa, Southern Africa, Southeast Asia, South Asia, Far Eastern Asia, Caribbean, Central America, South America, and Oceania). Up to three fellowships of a maximum of $23,000 each are awarded annually.

The fellowship supports research on the relationship between forest resources and the social, economic, cultural, and environmental welfare of people in developing countries, particularly under changing climate conditions, with a focus on less privileged people and forest communities.
