About this scholarship

High school seniors anticipating diploma completion who plan to pursue a degree at an accredited U.S. post-secondary institution with at least a 2.5 GPA may enter the SABR Negro Leagues Committee essay contest. One winner receives $1,000 and one special-recognition award receives $500.

Submit an application, recommendation letter, activity lists, and a 1,200-word essay on a Negro Leagues baseball topic.

The Jimmie Crutchfield Memorial Scholarship, administered by the Society for American Baseball Research, honors the legacy of Negro Leagues baseball.

  • Eligibility: current high school senior, anticipating completion of high school diploma at time of application, planning to pursue a degree at an accredited U.S. postsecondary institution, minimum 2.5
  • Letter of recommendation from a high school teacher, guidance counselor, or school administrator confirming graduation and GPA
  • Completed application form (name, address, GPA, school info, etc.)
  • List of high school activities and offices held (separate sheet, typed)

  • Essay style: typed, double-spaced, 12 point Times New Roman; must cite examples and references using endnotes/taught citation format — failure to cite results in disqualification
