H.L. Holmes Award for Post-Doctoral Studies

Direct application

Up to $100,000/year

About this scholarship

Canadian citizens who graduated from a recognized Canadian university and hold a doctoral degree, from a Canadian or outstanding foreign university, received within the five years before the deadline may apply. The proposed research must pertain to chemistry, physics, biology, or mathematics as they relate to medical and biological processes; extensions to the five-year window are possible for industry or government employment and career interruptions.

Awards cover a one or two-year period and can be worth up to $100,000 per year, not including travel expenses, depending on available funding and the research proposal. The 2026 nomination period closed March 20, 2026, with funding starting January 1, 2027; the next competition's dates have not been posted.

Candidates apply directly by email or are nominated by a Canadian university or research organization willing to host the research. The package includes a research proposal of at most 10 pages with budget and timeline, a CV, three letters of endorsement sent directly by the endorsers, a host-organization letter, and proof of citizenship and degrees.

The award supports post-doctoral study under outstanding researchers at Canadian graduate schools and research institutes, in honour of the late Dr. H.L. Holmes.
