About this scholarship

Graduate students in the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology program in the Irving K. Barber Faculty of Science at UBC Okanagan may be considered for these awards. Preference is given to students who have demonstrated a commitment to volunteerism, financial need, and promise in medical or health research.

Awards totalling $8,500 are available from an endowment established by Maria Bianca Iafrancesco in memory of her husband Giuseppe (Joe) Iafrancesco (1947-2018), along with matching funds from the Faculty of Science. The Irving K. Barber Faculty of Science recommends recipients.

Bianca and Joe have been part of the Kelowna community since immigrating to Canada from Italy. Joe volunteered with many local, provincial, and federal non-profit organizations and was known for his dedication to community.
