About this scholarship

Open to undergraduate students majoring in Creative Writing or Master of Fine Arts students specializing in Creative Writing at UBC Vancouver who have completed an outstanding translation of a published work of poetry into English. The translated work must be from poetry in languages other than English. Preference is given to students in literary translation courses or workshops offered by the School of Creative Writing.

Award amounts vary. Funding comes from an endowment established by George and Angela McWhirter.

There is no separate student application. Awards are made on the recommendation of the School of Creative Writing, and for graduate students, in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

The award celebrates George McWhirter winning the Griffin Poetry Prize in 2024 for his translation of Self-Portrait in the Zone of Silence by Mexican poet Homero Aridjis.
