About this scholarship
Founded in 1971, the George and Nora London Foundation Competition is one of the oldest and most prestigious vocal competitions for young opera singers at the start of their careers. Applicants must be citizens of the United States or Canada.
Singers apply online with their educational background, performing experience, and a list of four arias in contrasting styles and languages. Up to 90 singers are invited to a three-day preliminary round in New York City, and up to 15 finalists perform at the final concert.
Up to five singers receive the George London Award of $12,000 each; the remaining finalists receive $2,000 encouragement awards. Past winners include Renee Fleming, Joyce DiDonato, and Eric Owens. Applications are accepted annually, closing in early January (January 9 for the 2026 competition).
