About this scholarship

Outstanding graduate students at UBC Vancouver enrolled in the M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Botany or the M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Plant Science who are researching plant natural products and biochemistry, including students conducting research with the Michael Smith Laboratories, may be nominated for this award.

Awards totalling $1,600 come from an endowment established in memory of Neil Towers (1923-2004). The Department of Botany recommends recipients in even-numbered years and the Faculty of Land and Food Systems in odd-numbered years, in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. If there are no suitable applicants in a given year, the alternate graduate program may nominate candidates.

Professor Emeritus Towers served as Head of the Department of Botany from 1964 to 1971 and was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.
