About this scholarship
Alberta kindergarten to Grade 12 teachers, instructors, or Elders improving First Nations, Métis, or Inuit language proficiency or teaching methods through an accredited post-secondary course. Applicants must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or protected persons (visa students are not eligible), Alberta residents, and have a background in FNMI language learning and culture or have recently started studying such a language. The course must be an accredited credit course of at least three weeks, focusing on language, culture, or instructional development, and may run any time from May to March of a school year.
Up to three bursaries of up to $4,200 each. Funding covers tuition first, then travel, then accommodations, after course completion documentation and eligible receipts are submitted.
Apply with a one-page statement of intent, school authority endorsement, completed application form, and a syllabus or brochure describing the course. Priority goes to first-time applicants; previous recipients may re-apply after five years.
Funded through the Alberta Heritage Scholarship Fund to strengthen FNMI language teaching capacity in Alberta schools.
