About this scholarship

Open to First Nations, Inuit, or Metis students of Canada in a graduate program in the UBC Vancouver School of Nursing who demonstrate a commitment to culturally safe care.

Award amounts vary. Douglas D. Paterson endowed the awards in memory of his mother Elsie E. (Perry) Paterson (1905-1995).

No separate student application. Awards are made on the recommendation of the School of Nursing, in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

Elsie found profound meaning in her work as a nurse with First Nations communities, primarily on the West Coast of Vancouver Island, and was a strong advocate for the health and wellbeing of the communities she served.
