About this scholarship

Open to Indigenous students enrolled in a major, minor, or graduate program in Art History, Visual Art and Theory at UBC Vancouver who are in good academic standing.

Awards totalling $2,450 are funded through an endowment established by the Audain Foundation, the Faculty of Arts, and friends and family in memory of Ellen Neel and Beau Dick. The per-recipient amount varies. Awards are made on the recommendation of the department; for graduate students, selection is in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

Ellen Neel (1916-1966) was a Kwakwaka'wakw artist and the first woman recognized for carving poles on the Northwest Coast. Chief Beau Dick (1955-2017) was an expert carver and AHVA Artist in Residence from 2013 to 2017.
