Dr. Marketa Goetz-Stankiewicz Memorial Scholarship

Undergraduate students at UBC Vancouver who have completed at least 12 credits in the Department of Central, Eastern, and Northern European Studies (CENES), including at least two courses taught in a language other than English, are eligible for this scholarship. Scholarships totalling $9,200 are made available through an endowment established by the estate of Dr. Marketa Goetz-Stankiewicz. The award celebrates emerging speakers of CENES languages and their multilingual development as thinkers and community-builders.

There is no separate application. The awards are made on the recommendation of the Department of Central, Eastern and Northern European Studies.

Dr. Goetz-Stankiewicz immigrated to Canada from Czechoslovakia in 1948, earned her Ph.D. from Columbia University, and joined UBC's Department of Germanic Studies in 1959, serving as department head from 1980 to 1985 before retiring as Professor Emerita in 1992.
