Students in the UBC Vancouver combined M.Sc. and Diploma in Pediatric Dentistry program who have demonstrated academic excellence may be considered for this award.
The award amount varies. Awards are funded through gifts from friends, family, and colleagues in memory of Dr. Gary Derkson (1942-2018).
Recipients are recommended by the Faculty of Dentistry in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. There is no separate student application.
Dr. Derkson was born in Winkler, Manitoba, and received his Doctor of Dental Medicine from the University of Manitoba. He joined the Faculty of Dentistry in 1977 as an Associate Professor of Pediatrics, retiring as Associate Professor Emeritus in 2004, and served as Chief of Dentistry at BC Children's Hospital from 1986 to 2004.
