Doctoral students in any discipline at Dalhousie University who demonstrate outstanding achievements may apply. Canadian and international students are eligible.

Colleagues established the award in 1968 to honour sociologist Dr. Edgar Z. Friedenberg on his retirement from Dalhousie's School of Education. He later taught at Dalhousie after moving to Canada and remained active in civil liberties work.
