About this scholarship
Texas high school seniors, including homeschooled students, planning to attend an accredited college, university, or trade school who have led litter-prevention or community beautification projects may apply for the Don't Mess with Texas Scholarship Contest.
Two winners each receive $5,000. Apply online at dontmesswithtexas.org by April 2.
The contest recognizes seniors who have taken a leadership role to prevent litter in their school or community. The Don't Mess with Texas campaign has helped keep litter off Texas roads through education programs and statewide outreach.

- Essay of 300 to 350 words describing litter-prevention and beautification efforts, including statistics and measurable results
- Open only to Texas high school seniors planning to attend a two- or four-year accredited Texas college/university; currently attending public, private, or home school in Texas; must be a current Texas
- Essay may be handwritten or typed.
- May submit up to three additional supporting documents or photos.
- Must provide names and phone numbers of at least two adults (over 18) who helped with the efforts described.
- Permission for school counselor to be contacted as a reference if a finalist.
- Winners may be asked to participate in a brief video interview describing their litter prevention project.
- Applicants may be public-school, private-school, or homeschooled students currently attending school in Texas.
- Up to three additional supporting documents or photos may be submitted.
- Provide names and phone numbers for at least two adults over 18 who assisted with the described efforts.
- Finalists must permit school-counselor reference contact; winners may be asked to participate in a video interview.
