About this scholarship
Graduating seniors from public high schools in Clackamas, Multnomah, or Washington counties in Oregon or Clark County in Washington with a minimum 3.0 GPA may apply to Humanists of Greater Portland.
Scholarship amounts vary depending on available funding.
Write a 750 to 1,200 word essay on the annual Humanist-themed prompt and submit the application with parental permission and school transcripts. Pick up forms from high school counselors or download them from the HGP website. Winners present their essays at an HGP Sunday program and must submit proof of post-secondary plans before receiving funds.

- Must use quotations, sources and citations (APA, MLA, or Chicago Style) and cite specific sources on Humanism throughout; include a clear thesis statement
- Plagiarism including ChatGPT/AI use results in disqualification — essays must be in your own words
- Eligibility: graduating in 2026 with a high school diploma/GED from a public high school in Clackamas, Multnomah, Washington (OR) or Clark (WA) county; 3.0+ GPA; specific plans for post-secondary educ
- Submit by midnight Sunday April 5, 2026 to scholarship@portlandhumanists.org: completed/signed application form, the essay, and high school transcript showing 3.0+ GPA
- Awards: 1st $3,500, 2nd $2,500, 3rd $1,500; winners must present their essay to HGP Membership on Sunday June 21
- Choose one annual Humanist-themed prompt.
- Essay must be typed in 12-point font, double-spaced, submitted as PDF or DOCX, and use quotations, sources, citations, and a clear thesis.
