About this scholarship

Graduate planning students nominated by their department chair at Columbia, Harvard Graduate School of Design, MIT, the New School, or the University of Pennsylvania may be selected. Nominees must be U.S. citizens with demonstrated financial need who will pursue careers as practicing planners. Prior APA fellowship or scholarship winners are not eligible.

One recipient receives $5,000.

Applications are submitted through the student's planning program with two recommendations and proof of acceptance into an eligible master's planning program.

This APA Foundation scholarship honors planner Charles Abrams, who taught at the five eligible schools.

  • U.S. citizen accepted into a graduate planning master's program at one of five eligible schools (Columbia, Harvard GSD, MIT, New School/Milano, UPenn)
  • Letter of nomination/statement from the program's department chair
  • Completed and signed APA Foundation Financial Aid Application (must demonstrate genuine financial need)
  • Transcripts of all previous collegiate and graduate academic work (electronic copies preferred)
  • Official copy of GRE scores, if required for admission to the school
  • Additional information and certification section completed and signed; applicant's signature on the application
  • Incoming students must include a letter of acceptance with the nominating letter
  • Prior winners of any APA-administered fellowship/scholarship are not eligible
  • Optional: cover letter; certificate of independence (notarized statement) if claiming financial independence
  • Submit as electronic packet to scholarships@planning.org
  • GRE scores are required only if required for admission to the school.
