About this scholarship
Law enforcement Explorers in 12th grade or an accredited college program may apply for one of two $2,500 merit scholarships from the National Technical Investigators' Association. Candidates are evaluated on academics, leadership, extracurricular activities, and a personal statement on the significance of a technical background in law enforcement.
Awards are presented at the national law enforcement Explorer conference or a local ceremony.
The scholarship honors Captain James J. Regan, founder of NATIA, who believed in excellence through education for law enforcement technical investigators.

What else to submit
- Completed application with required certifications and endorsements
- Three letters of recommendation
- High school transcript, plus college transcript if enrolled in college
- Personal statement of at least 250 words on how technology will affect law enforcement in the 21st century
- Black-and-white glossy photograph
- Open only to law enforcement Explorers (Learning for Life) in the 12th grade or enrolled in an accredited college program
- Three letters of recommendation, at least two from people outside of law enforcement (one each from a school/community official, a post leader, and a law/law enforcement official other than the post A
- High school transcripts (if in college, submit both college and high school transcripts)
- A black-and-white glossy photograph (preferably in uniform) for publicity purposes if selected
- Completed application form with certifications/endorsements from Post Advisor, head of the participating organization, and Learning for Life representative, plus applicant and parent/guardian signatur
- Application form Part III also asks short-answer qualification items (prior law enforcement experience, organizations, leadership positions, awards, technical interests/background)
- Original and a copy of the application and support materials must be received by March 31
