About this scholarship
UBC Vancouver graduate students whose research focuses on freshwater and/or diadromous fisheries may be considered for this award, with preference first for M.Sc. students and then Ph.D. students who are not concurrently holding another major graduate award.
The award amount varies. Awards may be renewed while recipients make continued satisfactory academic progress until they complete their M.Sc. or Ph.D. requirements. Funding comes from an endowment established by Brian Jessop.
Recipients are recommended by the Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. There is no separate student application.
Brian received his B.Sc. from UBC in 1966 and his M.Sc. from the University of Waterloo in 1969. He worked as a stock assessment biologist with Fisheries and Oceans Canada and is well-regarded internationally for his expertise in the management of diadromous fish species.
