About this scholarship

U.S. high school seniors preparing to enter an accredited college or university who reside in Tennessee, Mississippi, or Arkansas, or who are affiliated with a bird dog club or field trial association in any other state, may enter the Bird Dog Foundation annual college scholarship essay contest.

Three one-time scholarships are awarded, with a top prize of $2,000 paid to the winner's accredited college upon proof of registration.

Write an original essay following published contest rules and suggested topics on hunting, wildlife conservation, and outdoor heritage. Include a cover sheet with your contact information and school details.

The Bird Dog Foundation promotes interest in hunting, wildlife conservation, and America's outdoor heritage. Winners are recognized at the National Bird Dog Museum in Grand Junction, Tennessee.

  • Original 900- to 1,000-word essay on an approved topic
  • Bibliography with at least five sources, including at least three books or periodicals
  • Cover sheet with contact, school, and affiliation details

  • Proof of college registration for payment of an award
  • Essay must be 900 to 1,000 words (range stated verbatim).
  • Topic must be selected from the Foundation's list of acceptable Conservation & Wildlife and Sporting Dogs & Field Trials topics; strict adherence to the listed topics is required.
  • A Bibliography is required with a minimum of five sources, of which at least three must be books or periodicals (websites may also be cited).
  • Reference source citations must be numbered in the body of the essay and listed in the Bibliography.
  • Essays must be typed and double-spaced; recommended font Arial or Times New Roman, size no larger than 12 or 14.
  • The submission must include a total word count.
  • A cover sheet must accompany the essay (title, full name, home mailing address, phone numbers, email, school name/address, sporting-dog club affiliation if applicable, and date).
  • Eligibility: U.S. citizen, 12th-grade college-bound high school senior residing in TN, MS, or AR, OR (any U.S. state) affiliated with a Field Trial / Bird Hunting / Sporting Dog club or organization.
  • Deadline: April 15th each year. An emailed version of the essay is required in addition to any other submission form.
  • Awards: 1st place $2,000, 2nd place $1,500, 3rd place $1,000, paid to an accredited institution.
  • Essay citations must be numbered in the essay body and listed in the bibliography.
  • Awards are one-time and paid to the winner's accredited institution.
