About this scholarship
Outstanding M.A.Sc., M.F., M.Sc., and Ph.D. students in the Faculty of Forestry at the University of British Columbia's Vancouver campus are eligible if they are on exchange outside of British Columbia, conducting international field research, or focusing on international forestry issues for their thesis. Scholarships totalling $6,100 are made available annually, with individual amounts varying.
There is no application; awards are made on the recommendation of the Faculty of Forestry, in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.
The endowment was established by Charles Backman, along with matching funds from the Faculty of Forestry. The Backman family's ties to the British Columbia forestry industry go back to the early 1900s, and Charles' parents, Bill and Elizabeth Backman, both attended UBC in the 1940s.
