About this scholarship

The AREMA Educational Foundation awards scholarships, generally $1,000 to $5,000 each, to engineering students interested in the railway industry. In 2025 the Foundation awarded $37,000 across seventeen scholarships. One online application covers all AREMA scholarships, and the review committee matches candidates to the awards they best fit.

Applicants must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program leading to a degree in engineering or engineering technology accredited by ABET (or the comparable body in Canada or Mexico), have at least a 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale, and hold AREMA membership; student membership is complimentary. The application includes a 350-word personal statement describing the applicant's railroading interest areas, such as freight, signals, transit, bridges, or geotechnical work.

The most recent deadline was December 12, 2025; awards are announced in March.
