About this scholarship
South Carolina public-school twelfth graders who are U.S. citizens, have attended South Carolina public schools for the past two years, and plan to attend an in-state college or university may compete for the Archibald Rutledge Creative Writing Scholarship through the South Carolina Department of Education.
One creative writing scholarship of approximately $2,000 is awarded (the broader Archibald Rutledge program also offers parallel awards in dance, music, theatre, and visual arts). Funds transfer directly to a South Carolina college or university.
Submit an original creative writing composition (up to two double-spaced pages), reflection statement, process folio, and school application materials. Entries must be from the 2024-25 or 2025-26 school year and are submitted through the school counseling office.
