About this scholarship

High school seniors and undergraduates dedicated to language education may apply for ACTFL Future Teacher Scholarships of $1,500 per academic year, renewable up to three times for a $6,000 cumulative total. Graduate students pursuing language-teaching certification are also eligible.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens, nationals, or permanent residents with a 3.0+ GPA, attending a U.S. institution, and pursuing a credential as a language educator. You need at least two years of study in the same language or valid proficiency results from ACTFL or comparable assessments. Submit the online application with language study documentation and a transcript.

Scholars receive complimentary ACTFL membership and access to the mentoring program for early-career language educators.

  • Current transcript showing a GPA of 3.0 or higher (4.0 scale)
  • Language proficiency documentation: two years of same-language coursework on transcript OR results from ACTFL OPI, AAPPL, or comparable assessment
  • Copy of college acceptance letter (or current transcript if already enrolled)
  • One letter of recommendation from a language teacher or school counselor, submitted directly by the recommender to scholarships@actfl.org
  • Applicant essay: “Teaching a world language means...” (250 words maximum).
  • Renewable up to three times, for up to $6,000 cumulative funding.
